Danny Whitaker’s magic!

Okay I admit it. I love the bones of Danny Whitaker! Not only is he one of the best midfielders ever to have worn the beloved blue & white of my Silkmen, he is also an incredibly humble and genuine guy who knows what it is like to live and work in the town of Macclesfield. As a consequence, he understands exactly what it means to the small but incredibly loyal fan-base of our beloved blues to compete in the English Football League when clubs with infinitely more resources struggle to compete even two tiers below us.

When the completely ineffectual Mark Yates was (rightfully) sacked Danny took the reins and led us to our first Football league win against Carlisle United. I acknowledge that we suffered heavy home defeats against Bury and Northampton Town in the early weeks of his tenure but the recruitment of the class act that is Nathan Cameron and a wonderful away victory against high flying Exeter City (it was under DANNY and I was there!) showed that we were moving in the right direction. The subsequent appointment of Premiership and England legend Sol Campbell demonstrated a desire from the hierarchy at MTFC to recruit a high profile Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) figure to help to move us in the right direction and hopefully secure the personnel to maintain our presence in the EFL.

This approach should be rightly be lauded as very admirable in bucking the current trend in English football regarding BAME managers in English football, but it is fair to say that Sol’s record since his appointment can be described as mediocre at best. We currently lie in a very precarious position; six points adrift of safety (actually seven when you include goal difference) and at risk of an ignominious return to non-league obscurity after only one season amongst the elite of 92 Football League clubs. Sadly there has been a consummate lack of interaction from Sol with the rank and file which has been most apparent with the lack of managerial / playing staff within the confines of the McIlroy Suite following games, and absence of any sort of fans forum other than an extortionate / elitist  ‘conversation’ involving 30 or so individuals!!

To see Danny reduced to the role of cone carrier / sidekick is heartbreaking to say the least. Danny is a very talented and skilful midfielder who is understandably adored by the Silkmen faithful and has rightfully achieved the status of a Silkmen legend due to his endeavours on the pitch for us. We have two massive games against Exeter City and Yeovil Town coming up and there is now no better time to get Danny onto the field of play and hopefully support us to achieve a crucial six points as we strive to achieve the goal of EFL safety. Danny really is magic and now is the time to Sol swallow his pride and let Danny do his magic out on the pitch to help secure our Football League status. If you don’t do this Sol, you could forever receive the notoriety as the manager who took us down to non-league obscurity whilst overlooking an incredibly popular and talented Silkmen legend at a time when you most needed him!

I am Silkmen till I die!
