John Rayner: Rest In Peace Good Friend!

SLE were deeply saddened to hear of the passing of John last Thursday. John was an absolute gentleman in every sense of the word, and was a very well liked and highly respected individual by all those who were priviliged to know him. In all the years I knew him, I never heard anyone say a bad word about him!

John held a senior position at Pochin’s Ltd; one of the North West’s premier construction and property development groups that encompasses the commercial, residential, industrial and education sectors. John’s wide breadth of knowledge on all things construction related meant that he proved to be an invaluable source of advice and practical support to both the football club itself and the Silkmen Supporters Trust (SST). John was a long serving member of the SST board, and even held down the role of chairman for a number of years where he provided an unassuming, approachable,  dedicated, and incredibly calm and relaxed approach to the role. This, in combination with John’s natural ability to communicate as easily with high ranking officials within the club as with the rank and file supporters, meant that he was viewed by many as a perfect chairman of the SST.

I had the pleasure of knowing John for many years and working alongside him on a number of ventures whilst we were both on the board of the SST, particularly during it’s early years. I was constantly in awe of his incredible humility, and never once did I see him boasting about the amazing behind the scenes work that he did to make a difference to the club that he loved. John would instead prefer to praise the efforts of others, and to stay in the background when plaudits were handed out. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of John who was genuinely one of the nicest people you could ever hope to meet. Rest in Peace John, and you will never be forgotten, and will be much missed by those who had the pleasure of knowing you.
