Sammy McIlroy took his Macclesfield Town side to Gresley Rovers twenty two years ago today, as the two sides met in the FA Umbro Trophy Quarter Final.
The Silkmen had already disposed of Runcorn, Purfleet and Sudbury Town in the first three rounds and made the journey to the Moat ground looking to reach the semi final of the competition for the second time in four years.
The reigning Vauxhall Conference champions started the game firmly on the front foot and they would take the lead after just nine minutes, when Mark Bradshaw fired home a glorious twenty yard drive to give the ‘keeper no chance.
Macc continued to make all the running, with Tony Hemmings in particular causing The Moatmen a who host of problems with his lightening turn of pace.
Marc Coates, Steve Wood and Kevin Hulme could all have added to the scoreline before Phil Power doubled our advantage five minutes before the interval.
To their credit the home side could well have capitulated in the second half, yet they gallantly repelled their illustrious visitors to keep the scoreline respectable.
Macc would go on to face Chorley in a two legged semi final to determine who would earn the right to play under the twin towers and we will feature these games in the coming weeks.
