Played For Both: Neill Byrne

Ahead of Saturday’s trip to Gateshead, we look at one of the most recent players to feature for both The Silkmen and The Heed.

Neill started his career in his homeland with spells at Irish sides Portmarnock and Belverdere before moving to England at the tender age of 14 to join Nottingham Forest where he was awarded his first professional contract in 2011.

First Team football proved to be evasive at the City Ground, and the defender moved to Rochdale the following January.

Loan spells at Barrow and Southport followed, before Byrne signed for AFC Telford and played an integral part of their 2013-14 promotion winning season.

In 2015, Neill joined The Silkmen and made the left back position his own before a series of injuries and suspensions saw him drop down to the bench.

Last season, Neill was mainly utilised as a substitute during the first half of the season, yet as the campaign wore on he gradually reclaimed his place back in the starting eleven and played a pivotal role in the club reaching the FA Trophy Final at Wembley.

Neill made 65 appearances for Macc, scoring five goals in the process before he joined Gateshead last summer whilst being out of contract.

He will no doubt be wanting to put one over his former employees this Saturday!
