Match Preview: Silkmen v Blackpool

The curtain finally comes down on pre-season tomorrow when newly promoted League One side Blackpool visit the Moss Rose.

With two victories and two defeats, there is much to be optimistic about on currently showings and Sir John’s new look side will be eager to build on the convincing mid-week victory over Crewe with the new season now just a week away.

Despite the tremendous change in personnel, the team seem to be playing with fluency and belief, which is testament to the work which goes on behind the scenes, as well as the character of the new players who have come in instantly gelled.

It is thought that tomorrow’s starting XI will give us all a strong indication of who will be in Sir John’s thoughts ahead of the trip to Wrexham next week, although with several trialists impressing against Crewe they are sure to get another look in to try and earn themselves a contract.

Our visitors are preparing for life back in League One after they beat Exeter City in the League Two Play Off Final last May. Former Blackburn Manager Gary Bowyer has understandably added numerous new faces to the ranks over recent weeks, the latest of which being Viv Solomon – Otabor who signed on loan from Birmingham on Thursday.

The Tangerines have also brought in defender Curtis Tilt (Wreham), Ollie Turon (Crewe), Ben Williams (Bury), Nick Anderton (Barrow), Max Clayton (Bolton), Jimmy Ryan (Fleetwood), Peter Hartley (Bristol Rovers) and Christoffer Mafoumbi from the Free State Stars.

Other players of note at Bloomfield Road are former Silkmen winger Colin Daniel and striker Danny Philiskirk – son of the legendary Tony.

Blackpool have had a very positive pre-season so far although they have almost exclusively played lower league sides.

They started off with a 1 – 0 defeat away at Dundee United, but followed this up with a convincing 3 – 1 win at Haig Avenue against Conference North side, Southport.

Last Saturday, two Blackpool sides turned out – one at Radcliffe Borough who won 7 – 0, and another at Salford City who again emerged victorious, this time by four goals to three.

On Tuesday evening The Tangerines travelled to Victory Park to take on Chorley and came away with a convincing 3 – 0 victory thanks to a stunner from Danny Philiskirk and a brace from Mark Cullen.

Blackpool make the trip to Bradford City next Saturday to open their League One campaign and speaking to their official website, Mark Cullen stated that plenty of players are capable of getting on the scoresheet.

All the lads are capable and we saw that last season with the spread of goals right throughout the team. It’s a good thing to have within the squad because it doesn’t put all the burden on one man”

Mark Cullen

All in all, it promises to be a great game of football on Saturday, so why not come down and cast your eye over our new look squad.
