Player Profiles: Josh Thompson

Josh was born in Bolton on 25th February 1991 and after launching his career at local rivals Stockport County, moved north of the border to join Scottish giants Celtic in August 2009 for a fee of £250,000.

Thompson made his debut at Parkhead a year later when he cam on for Stephen McManus in a one all draw with Falkirk.

A couple of months later, Josh made his first start in the hallowed green and white hoops in an away match with St Johnstone – which Celtic romped to a comfortable 4 – 1 victory.

He went on to make 21 appearances in all competitions for Celtic before his appearances were curtailed by new Manager Neil Lennon.

At which point, loan moves to Rochdale, Peterborough and Chesterfield followed, before making the move down to the south coast to sign for Portsmouth.

His stint at Fratton Park was marred by an ankle injury which kept him out of contention for six weeks and in late 2012 Thompson signed for Colchester United, initially on loan but that was made permanent at the beginning of 2013.

Thompson made 22 league appearances for the Us before moving to Prenton Park to sign for Tranmere Rovers.

Josh struggled to get regular First Team football on the Wirral and was released by the club following their relegation from the Football League in 2015.

Thompson then signed for Southport where he enjoyed a good run of matches before a horrific knee injury almost ended his career at the start of 2017.

Sir John made his move for the defender after his release from the Sandgrounders during the summer of 2017 and once fully recovered is a player which has a great amount of potential at National League level.
